Cambodia protests alleged Thai violations of its sovereignty

Cambodia has lodged a formal protest against Thailand over what it describes as continued violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity along the two countries’ shared frontier.

In its statement, Phnom Penh called on Bangkok to respect existing boundary arrangements and to refrain from activities near disputed markers that could inflame tensions. The protest is the latest in a series of exchanges between the neighbours over their long and sensitive border.

A long-running dispute

Sections of the Cambodia-Thailand border remain contested, with periodic flare-ups over demarcation, historic sites and access. Both governments have at times turned to diplomatic channels and international mechanisms to manage the disagreements.

Cambodia reiterated its preference for resolving differences peacefully and through dialogue, while insisting that its territorial claims be upheld.

Calls for restraint

Officials urged calm on both sides and warned against unilateral steps on the ground. The dispute adds to a wider set of frictions between the neighbours, even as trade and transport links between them continue to expand.
