Cambodia braces for flood risk amid heavy rain forecast

Cambodia is bracing for elevated flood risk as forecasters warned of very heavy rainfall across parts of the country in the final days of September, raising the prospect of flooding in low-lying and riverside areas.

Weather and disaster-management bodies advised residents in exposed districts to monitor updates, secure belongings and prepare to move to higher ground if water levels rise. Farmland, roads and homes near major rivers are among the most vulnerable.

Seasonal risks

The warning comes during Cambodia’s rainy season, when swollen rivers and heavy downpours regularly threaten communities along the Mekong and Tonle Sap systems. Flooding can disrupt transport, damage crops and displace families for days or weeks.
